What is a hydrocolloid bandage/patch? Why is it good for your acne?
Well, here’s a little history lesson on hydrocolloid...
Hydrocolloid bandages were created in the 1980’s as a means to create a moist environment for wounds by allowing gelling agents (such as pectin or gelatin) to draw fluid and pus out of said wound(s) and suspend them on a bandage and/or patch.
Hydrocolloid bandages, were a great substitute to dry bandages and gauze because often times, dry bandages would stick to the wound and “re-open” the wound upon trying to remove and/or change the bandage. Thus, the medical community widely came to accept the use of moist wound healing.
As hydrocolloid became wide-spread in it’s uses, approximately 15 years ago, it was introduced to the acne market as a possible “solution” for acne. As we all know, acne often has pus and liquids that need to be exuded from it...and Hydrocolloid is perfect for that.
Hydrocolloid patches and bandages for acne keep the environment protected, keep it moist so it can heal, reduce picking which causes scarring and possible spread of infection and bacteria, and also has been shown to reduce oiliness, redness, and inflammation even 3-7 days after use dependent on severity and skin type.
